A tragi-comic character, Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) suffers from bipolar disorder, and can become unhinged without warning. Her efforts to help those she loves often fail, but she never stops trying...

Children Sean, Stacy
2004 Taken into hospital, so daughter Stacey moves in with Uncle Charlie Slater.
2005 Tries to kill herself and is taken into a psychiatric unit.
2006 More stable, she's allowed to move into a flat and contacts Stacey. Reunited with son Sean, who she thought was dead. He remains hostile towards her.
2007 Moves in with the Slaters.
2008 Kidnapped by a deranged Sean. They talk things through, including the baby Roxy's having (Sean thinks it's his). Has a brief romance with Ted, who she meets at a Singles Night. He can't handle her, though. Attends Sean's marriage to Roxy.
2009 Following Sean's abduction of baby Amy and his fall through the ice, Stacey tells her mum Sean's gone for good. Has a breakdown. Returns after a few months. Gets job on flower stall. Sees Stacey needs help and is with her when she's diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
June 2010 Visits Stacey in hospital on the day that Lily is born.
Oct 2010 Gets together with Billy after he defends her in R&R. But later overhears him making some ill-judged insulting comments about her.
